Gabriel Michael Gray was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma-- the son of two prominent local lawyers. The story of their meeting was amusing enough; his father was the city prosecutor and his mother was a defense attorney, and they were always in the courtroom, battling it out with each other. Romance overruled common sense, and they were married when they were both thirty. Gabe was a late in life baby, born when his mother was 35, and he was the only son of the proud parents. He was given everything he wanted from an early age, but he was also taught responsibility, good manners and humility. And all that hard work on his parents' part paid off: they were rewarded with a responsible, thoughtful, intelligent, pretty much perfect son. Gabe was the kind to trust blindly, never seeing the bad elements in those he loved. So trusting, in fact, that it completely threw him for a loop when it became public knowledge that his father was cheating on his mother. Apparently, his father had loved his mother's fiery defense attorney persona; her strange, Stepford-like turn into Holly Housewife had left her husband bewildered and dismayed. So his father, while remaining a dutiful dad and loving husband, had repleced his mother with an affair on the side. And when Gabe's mother found out, she was devastated. Divorce papers were quickly filed, and soon, Gabe, who was at the time 17, had a new stepmother and a new stepbrother-- the brother he'd never had, and though it took him a while to come to terms with it, he ended up growing close to his new family. At age eighteen, tragedy struck again when Gabe's best childhood friend, Mark, drowned during a canoe trip on the Buffalo River in Arkansas. Gabe had pulled him from the water after he went in when their canoe capsized, but it was too late. Gabe never forgave himself for not saving Mark.

Besides being intelligent and articulate and handsome (or that's what people told him, at 6'3", with light brown hair and blue-green eyes -- well, one blue eye and one green eye-- and an athlete's build), Gabe was athletic. Incredibly so. He was the captain of the boys' basketball team at his high school, wide receiver on the football team and also the captain of the lacrosse team. He was Vice President of the National Honor Society, voted "best dressed" and "most likely to succeed" in the school Who's Who. In essence, he was everything any parent would want their daughter to date. There was no facade to him; no guile. Gabe hadn't won his popularity at school because he was handsome, athletic and smart. He was all of those things. But what Gabe was most-- was a good guy. What you saw was what you got. He didn't think of himself as good-looking, charismatic or talented. He saw himself as just another person, and wanted to do all the good he could in the world-- fiercely standing up for those he cared about and the things he believed in. It took a while for Gabe to let people in. A while before he trusted them. But once he did, they'd have a loyal, die-hard friend for life.

After High School, Gabe went on to the University of Oklahoma-- OU, where he immediately majored in Sports Medicine. A very active member of the ROTC, he hadn't been chosen to go to Iraq yet, but he was waiting, and if he had to go, he'd serve his time over there with pride. He joined a fraternity, did some partying, and generally had a great time. Well, except for when his girlfriend of two years decided to cheat on him. Nobody really understood why she did it, but this only made Gabe even more hard up to trust people. He had to get out-- and so he transferred to Hampton University on a basketball scholarship, to play starting point guard. He also got onto the football team as a wide receiver. He'd left Tulsa far behind him, and was looking forward to starting over. Working as a lifeguard at the local country club the summer before starting what would be his Junior year at Hampton, he knew anything could happen and he was looking forward to it.
